A Bright Star

Next to the study of dolphins, Shen's great passion in life was athletics. Whether it was softball, soccer, swimming, volleyball, or tennis, she usually was very successful.  She lettered in volleyball and won the Booster club's coveted Lionbackers' scholarship.

Shen 's athletic ability was in evidence as a young child.  She really started to shine when she began to play tennis. Although she did not begin to play until  her freshman year at Liberty High School in Carroll County, Maryland, she won three straight county titles.

Her game was described as not fancy, but patient and persistent.  She was a baseline player who put the ball into play and waited for her opponents to make a mistake.  When they did, she would pounce.  She had the ability to exploit her opponents' weaknesses.  Shen ended her senior year with a 12-5 winning record.

Her tennis coach was quoted as saying," In most sports today, the emphasis is on strength, power, and showmanship, and you've got to have a certain panache.  What's refreshing to me about Shen is that she comes out and keeps the ball in play and gives you a chance to make a mistake."  She truly loved to play, but when the game was over, life moved on.

Shen was known for her demonstration of good sportsmanship.  She exhibited the same gracious demeanor - win or lose.
